Osmotic action in wound care

Osmotic action is the process where a dressing draws fluid out of the wound using natural differences in concentration.

Think of it as a gentle “pulling” effect that helps clean the wound and create the right environment for healing.

How Osmotic action works in Wound Care

A dressing with osmotic properties (like maltodextrin, sugar‑based gels, or hypertonic agents are wound dressings that contain a high concentration of salts or sugars. - they naturally draw fluid out of the wound through osmosis.)

  1. Has a higher concentration of solutes (active particles) than the wound fluid

  2. This creates an osmotic gradient (the difference in solute concentration between wound dressing and wound fluid)

  3. Fluid naturally moves from the wound into the dressing

  4. As fluid is drawn out, it brings with it:

    • slough

    • debris

    • bacteria

    • inflammatory exudate

This supports autolytic debridement and reduces surface bioburden.

What is Autolytic Debridement?

Autolytic debridement is the body’s own natural method of removing non‑viable tissue from a wound. It uses the wound’s own moisture, enzymes, and immune cells to break down and lift away slough and necrotic tissue — gently and selectively.

It’s the safest and least traumatic form of debridement.

How Autolytic Debridement Works

  1. A moist wound environment is created (usually by a dressing).

  2. The body’s natural enzymes (proteases) and macrophages become active.

  3. These enzymes break down devitalised tissue.

  4. The softened slough and debris are then lifted away into the dressing.

  5. The wound bed becomes cleaner, healthier, and ready for granulation.

This process is selective — it removes only non‑viable tissue while protecting healthy tissue.
