Multodextrin

Maltodextrin is a highly processed carbohydrate made from plant starch (usually corn, rice, potato, wheat, or tapioca). Manufacturers break the starch down using heat, acids, or enzymes until it becomes a neutral‑tasting, water‑soluble white powder. It is widely used in food, pharmaceuticals and medical products.

How Maltodextrin Works in Wound Care

Maltodextrin supports wound healing by optimising moisture balance, facilitating autolytic debridement, and maintaining cellular activity within the wound bed.

It's Mechanism is simple

1. Osmotic action that assists autolytic debridement

Maltodextrin exerts a gentle osmotic pull, drawing excess exudate, slough and debris toward the surface. This helps:

•Hydrate and loosen devitalised tissue

•Reduce surface bioburden

•Support natural autolysis without cytotoxicity

Clinically, this means cleaner wound beds with less mechanical trauma.

2. Formation of a moist, protective gel layer

When maltodextrin interacts with wound fluid, it forms a viscous gel that:

•Maintains an optimal moist wound environment

•Protects exposed structures

•Prevents adherence to secondary dressings

•Supports granulation and epithelial migration

This gel layer is central to promoting orderly tissue repair.

3. Provides an energy substrate for reparative cells

Because maltodextrin is composed of short glucose chains, it can serve as a readily available energy source for:

•Fibroblasts

•Keratinocytes

•Macrophages

This is particularly relevant in chronic or stalled wounds, where cellular energy demand is high.

4. Helps reduce odour and surface bacteria

By drawing fluid and debris into the gel matrix, maltodextrin:

•Reduces the nutrient load available to bacteria

•Lowers surface bioburden

•Assists with odour control

It is not an antimicrobial, but it supports a cleaner wound environment.
